Amount of money to spend for one semester in a Kenyan university or college

For one semester, the amount of money you’ll spend in a Kenyan university or college is Ksh 20,000 to Ksh 50,000.We assume that you have already paid your fee and rent.

Life in universities located in small towns is not expensive because food is cheap. But if you are admitted to a university in Nairobi, the budget for 1 semester will be Ksh 25,000 to Ksh 60,000.

In a university, you will spend Ksh 50 for breakfast, Ksh 100 for lunch and Ksh 150 for supper. The total amount on food per day is Ksh 300.In a month, you will spend Ksh 9,000 on food. A semester has 3 months. In 3 months you will spend Ksh 18,000 on food.

Apart from food, there are other expenses like airtime, clothes, shopping, photocopy etc. In total the miscellaneous expenses will cost Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 10,000 per term.If you calculate the total cost per semester, you’ll realize that it’s above Ksh 25,000.

So before you go to college to study, make sure your pocket has at least Ksh 20,000 to spend for one semester. To be more comfortable, you should have Ksh 40,000 to Ksh 60,000.

But there are universities which allow students to cook in the hostels. In this case,the budget for the semester will be low.You will bring maize and beans from home for cooking. The budget for one semester will be Ksh 10,000 to Ksh 20,000.
