The first factory-brewed beer in Kenya was produced in 1922 using small copper vessels heated with firewood. The beer was hand-bottled, and the first batch of ten cases was personally delivered to the General Manager of the Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, now known as the Sarova Stanley.
Although the hotel had only recently opened, it quickly became a hub for visiting presidents and world-famous personalities.
George Hurst, a white settler who initiated the brewing process, played a pivotal role in establishing what would later become East African Breweries Limited. Historical records describe Hurst as a sociable, fun-loving individual who enjoyed hunting. He partnered with his brother Charles, and together they officially registered the company on Friday, December 8, 1922.
Tragically, in 1923, Hurst was killed by a charging elephant during a hunting expedition. To honor his memory, Charles named the lager they had created “Tusker.” The beer was first marketed in 1923, shortly after George’s untimely death. That same year, the iconic elephant logo, now synonymous with Tusker Lager, was introduced.
