Sex workers have moved from other estates, Nairobi CBD and Koinange Street to Pipeline Estate Nairobi. Many residents are worried that the sex workers will be a thorn in the flesh of Embakasi residents.
More than 10,000 sex workers are now operating at Embakasi, some of them have rented rooms where they operate them.
Embakasi has over 200,000 residents and it’s because of this high population that sex workers prefer the estate.
One of the sex workers revealed in an interview:
“We moved from Koinange Street because of lack of night life and enough clubs in the street. Transami was the best choice because it’s secure for us,police don’t harass us and we have many clients. I serve 4 to 10 clients per day and each of them pays Ksh300 to Ksh1000. In a month,I am able to make Ksh 70,000 to Ksh120,000”
Nairobi CBD used to be the best place for sex workers but since 2020,many clubs and pubs have closed or relocated to estates. Pipeline is one of the places with many pubs and night clubs. In such a small area, there are more than 300 wines and spirit shops, over 100 pubs and night clubs.
A resident of Pipeline noted that nowadays sex workers even operate outside their gate. When he was returning from work in the evening,he found 2 of them at the gate who stopped him. He thought they were inquiring of something only for them to say that they sell Ksh 300 only. They were wearing miniskirts.
Majority of the residents are worried of their teenagers. They fear that the sex workers will win them easily.
Majority of the residents in Pipeline are Kamba, Kikuyu and Kisiis.
