In August 1982, Hezekiah Rabala Ochuka, a junior Kenya Air Force soldier, briefly seized power in a failed coup against President Daniel arap Moi. Leading a group of junior officers, he took over the Voice of Kenya radio station, declared himself head of a “People’s Redemption Council,” and claimed to rule Kenya for about six hours. The coup quickly collapsed as loyal government forces regained control. Ochuka fled to Tanzania but was later extradited, tried for treason, and executed in 1987, becoming the last person officially executed in Kenya.
Raila Odinga was jailed for allegedly participating in the coup.
