If you scored A plain in Mathematics, there are courses you should pursue in Kenya which are related to mathematics. Of course you can pursue health related courses, engineering related courses or aviation related courses but in this article,we will only deal with mathematics related courses.

Bachelor of Actuarial Science

Many people would tell you Bachelor of Actuarial Science is not marketable. Of course, if you pursue the course without incorporating professional courses, you will find it hard to secure employment. Actuarial Science takes 4 years. While in college, enrol for Actuarial professional course. If you successfully pursue the professional certification, you will become marketable.

Most Actuaries work in government institutions, insurance companies, stock market, pension companies and banks. The salary of Actuaries will start from Ksh 80,000 but over time,it will grow to more than Ksh200,000 per month. Those who have become fully qualified as Actuaries, they earn more than Ksh150,000 per month.

Actuarial Science is a difficult course, you have to be very good in mathematics for you to pass this course.

Bachelor of Applied Statistics

Another marketable course related to Mathematics is Applied Statistics. The course is applied in every sector of the economy. The course is as tough as Actuarial Science.Maseno University is the best university to pursue Applied Statistics. You are required to score at least B plus in KCSE to pursue this course. The mathematics grade should be at least B+ in KCSE.

As a statistician, you can pursue ACCA,CFA,CPA,CIFA or CFE in order to become more marketable. You should also ensure that you are proficient in Microsoft tools and Statistics packages like SPSS,R and Stata. Statistics also go together with GIS and Remote Sensing tools.

The salary of a statistician in Kenya starts from Ksh 70,000 per month. NGOs,finance institutions and government parastatals are among the highest paying institutions for Statisticians.

Bachelor of Biostatistics

Biostatistics is also related to Applied Statistics. It’s applied in hospitals, NGOs and other health institutions. JKUAT is one of the best universities for Biostatistics course. In this course, you are required to learn about statistical modelling and be excellent in coding. You should also pursue Monitoring & Evaluation course.

Biostatistician in Kenya earns at least Ksh 100,000 per month. With Masters and PhD,you can become a lecturer or professional researcher.

Bachelor of Economics and Statistics

This course is where you apply econometrics and economics in your work. To become more marketable, you should pursue ACCA or CFA together with the Bachelor’s course. You will be working in banks, insurance companies, government institutions like KRA and stock market.

Your salary will be at least Ksh 80,000 per month.

Bachelor of Financial Engineering

Financial Engineering is offered at JKUAT. It’s tailored to fit the stock market requirements and financial institutions. To become more marketable, you should also pursue CIFA and CFA. Once you get certified as a Financial Analyst, you will easily get a job.

Bachelor of Education(Mathematics & Physics)

If you want to pursue a degree in education,select Bachelor of Education with specialization in mathematics & Physics. Very few Kenyans have done this specialization and it will be very easy for you to get a job. Alternatively,you can specialize in Computer Science and Mathematics so as to teach those courses inhigh school.

The salary of a high school teacher starts from Ksh 35,000 per month up to Ksh 200,000.
