Most people who grew up in Rift Valley have brown teeth.
The Rift Valley belt and its environs e.g Kajiado, Kiambu, Nairobi, Muranga, Naivasha, Nakuru, Kitengela etc face the challenge of having loads of fluoride in the water. Most homes get their water from a well or borehole. That is the problem right there!
Once ingested (Drinking or eating), fluoride gets incorporated to the tooth structure (enamel crystals) leading to a faulty crystal that makes the tooth enamel porous and brittle. This leads to different presentations including slight paper white stains to chipped of teeth with brown or dark stains.
This happens when the tooth is forming from the time the baby is born to young adulthood. The most critical age is birth to 16 years of age.
Once the teeth are already affected, you can visit a genuine dentist and they will give you options to help your child. Things such as masking can be done to make the teeth look more natural. The dentist should discuss with you what is best for the child at that age.
BUT WHY NOT PREVENT IT in the first place.
Floride can be removed from your drinking and cooking water by a filtration system called reverse osmosis. In Kenya we have several reverse osmosis gadgets/filters that can be installed in your kitchen sink tap line to save you from fluorosis and any other water hardness or infections. These systems will cost you around 40,000/- to 50,000/- (including purchase, installation and testing the water before and after installation) (We can help you to choose as your concerned dentists). The filtered water is excellent for drinking any time. You no longer have to buy bottled water.
