In Nairobi there are estates for the rich and others for the poor. Poor people in Nairobi mostly live in slums or lowest middle class estates. Below is a list of the estates where they live and the rent amount they pay per month.
Kibera
Rent here ranges between Ksh 500 and Ksh5,000 per month. Water is insufficient and security is not guaranteed. Drainage system is also not good. Kibera is one of the biggest slums in Africa.
Mathare
Rent per month is Ksh 800 to Ksh 6,000. Most of the houses are single rooms. It’s also insecure estate.
Dandora
Rent ranges between Ksh1,500 and Ksh 8,000 per month. Insecurity is high and drainage system is good. Kibera is even more secure than Dandora. Here you will get a one-bedroom house which goes for Ksh 5,000 to Ksh8,000.
Mukuru Kwa Njenga
It’s near pipeline where rent ranges between Ksh 1,500 and Ksh 6,000. The average rent is Ksh3,000. The slum is slowly changing because of the affordable housing which is being done by the government.
Kariobangi
One of the most insecure estates in Nairobi. Rent is between Ksh 1,000 and Ksh 6,000 per month. Water is scare and drainage is poor.
Soweto
It’s located near Kayole. Rent goes for Ksh 2,000 to Ksh4,000. Security is also not good in this estate.
Kangemi
Kagemi is near Westlands Nairobi but majority of people in this estate are poor. Rent is as cheap as Ksh 2.500 and as high as Ksh10,000. It’s an estate you can live in if you work in Westlands and your monthly salary is below Ksh50,000.
Korogocho
More than 98% of residents are poor. Rent per month is Ksh 2,500 to Ksh 5,000. Security is also not good.
Huruma
Huruma is among the oldest slums in Nairobi. Monthly rent is between Ksh 2,500 and Ksh 6,500.
Majengo
Rent is from Ksh 2,000 per month. People earning below Ksh30,000 per month live here.
Viwandani
It’s a growing slum where you pay below Ksh 5,000 per month. If you have a budget of Ksh2,500,stay here.
Kawangware
Kawangware is a mixture of poor and lower middle class citizens. There are specific slums to accommodate poor people where rent per month is Ksh 2,500 to Ksh 4,000. For lower middle class Kenyans,rent here can go between Ksh 6,000 and Ksh10,000
Pipeline
Middle class can also live here but majority of those living here earn below Ksh50,000 per month. Rent for a bedsitter is Ksh 3,500 to Ksh 9,000. Rent for one bedroom is Ksh 8,000 to Ksh15,000. There are single rooms which go for Ksh 3,000 to Ksh4,000.
