Early Life

Born in March 7, 1974 Kitui County, Peninah was born in Kibwea, Mutomo Region in Kitui County. Details on her early childhood as well as her siblings and birth parents are not known.

Education

She went to the University of Nairobi and came out with a degree in Public health. She also holds a bachelor of arts in Anthropology from the University of Nairobi as well. Peninah possesses a master’s degree in project management and planning from the University of Nairobi.

She attended a course at Sae maul Academy and Kyungwoon University on economic recovery models. She also completed a community Leadership MAS level 2 course at the Global University in the United States.

She also possesses a diploma in psychological counselling and is a member of the Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors.

Career Journey

Penina was in charge of a project at Changamwe Baptist Church in the year 2002 to 2006. This was a non-governmental group which helped disadvantaged students from Kitui County’s schools. She then served in a variety of capacities at Compassion International Kenya, eventually advancing to the position of Senior Director for Partner Training and support (2006-2013).She was the Deputy Governor for Kitui County from2013 to 2017.She deputized Governor Julius Malombe. After falling out with governor Malombe she was selected by former Kitui Senator David Musila as his running mate to succeed Governor Malombe. However both Malombe and Musila lost.

She ran for the Kitui Woman representative seat in 2022 but was unsuccessful. She also worked at AMREF- Kenya, as the project coordinator. In 2015, she received the Order of Grand Warrior Award (OGW). She is the current Cabinet Secretary for Tourism.

On September 27, 2022 she was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism by HE Dr William Ruto to replace former CS for Tourism Najib Balala. She is one of the two Cabinet Secretaries from the Ukambani Region. Additionally, she is the first-ever CS from Kitui south constituency.

Malonza alongside former Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, will now be the political point person for the president, especially in Kitui County. Ms. Malonza is now expected to steer the recovery of the Tourism industry which was deeply affected by the pandemic back in 2020.

Controversies

The National Assembly Committee had rejected her nomination as Tourism Cabinet Secretary, citing that she did not demonstrate knowledge of topical administrative and technical issues touching on the ministry of Tourism. A report tabled in parliament on 25th October 2022 read “She lacked the requisite abilities and professional experience to the approved appointment for appointment to the Office of the Cabinet Secretary,”

Her suitability was in question. It was however decided by the whole house, who overruled the committee and approved her appointment.
