History of Arimi, who owns it and how it became popular in Kenya

The creator of the famous milking jelly Hanish Shah came up with the product after completing high school. It was initially used for milking cows and every farmer loved it. Over the past few days, Kenyans on social media have stamped their foot that the rebranding of the skin care product, Arimi’s is no longer a discretion of the company.

The information became rampant after some images were posted on social media on the newly rebranded products. This led to an uproar from Kenyans on social media. Most of them were not pleased with what they saw. The images did not look authentic or pleasing.

The company came out to clarify that the images were not authentic and that there are no plans of rebranding, at least not any time soon. It is intriguing how a milking jelly turned out to be a widely used skin care product among Kenyans Country wide.

History

In the early 1990s, the product was used by people who could not afford standard skin care products. The only way they could keep up was to buy that petroleum jelly. It was their only option at the time. The milking jelly did have a certain scent. Everyone could notice or feel that somebody in a room has applied the jelly.

Those who were able to know, knew and those who could not, were left wondering what it was. It was that noticeable. Nowadays, everybody applies arimis, beauty goddesses have used it and proved that it is good for the skin. There is no shame in saying that you have applied arimis. In fact, people will be amazed at how it has worked on one’s skin.

The company started in 1983 with a man from Meru, Hanish Shah. He is a father of three and an O-level graduate who has managed a decent retail company selling goods before joining the family business in 1978. He got the concept from his interactions with German Enterprises and decided to try it out in Kenya.

The apostrophe in the name arimi’s is intentional. The name originated from the Meru culture where they referred to farmers as arimi’s. It gives a sense of pride and ownership to farmers. Hanish says that the brand grew through word of mouth. Many people shared the information and that it how the brand grew and became known.

Due to increased supplies, they relocated from Meru to Nairobi in 1985. Arimi’s is now made by Tri-Clover industries (Kenya) Ltd. where Hanish is the managing Director. Arimi’s has never been marketed as a skincare product but has broken the record and labelled as one of the best brands in Kenya.

The raw materials used to make it have been approved by US FDA standard grade. It is safe to use on skin care, it has a slightly different formula compared to the regular petroleum jelly but completely safe for human application.
