Early Life and Education
Yvonne Okwara was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. She attended Kianda High School, a top girls’ school in Kenya, where her interest in public speaking and debate began to develop.
She later pursued higher education at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. Despite having a science background, her passion for communication and media eventually led her into journalism.
She also received additional media training, including leadership and journalism programs abroad, notably at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and through the BBC’s training programs.
Career Journey
Yvonne began her career at KBC (Kenya Broadcasting Corporation), working as a voice-over artist and TV presenter. Her breakthrough came when she joined QTV and NTV, where she established herself as a credible current affairs journalist and news anchor.
She became widely known for her work at KTN News, where she hosted the highly acclaimed “Checkpoint” show — a Sunday night program that analyzed political events and policies with experts and decision-makers.
