For one to access and use the eCitizen services, they must have an account. Here are the requirements;
- A tablet/laptop/computer/phone that has internet
- An active email address
- A national Identity card
- A passport photo in soft copy
- An active phone number
- One must also chose the account they need from the platform. Here are the accounts available on the eCitizen; ns;
- Citizens; this is an account for Kenyans who own a Kenyan Identity card.
- Business; One needs a business registration number to open this account, which is just for Kenyan firms with registered accounts.
- Foreign Residents; This account is for foreign residents who are currently residing in the nation; the National ID number is replaced with the foreigner certificate.
- Visitors; Any foreigner who needs a Kenyan visa in order to enter Kenya should use this account.
After understanding the above information, one can proceed to open an eCitizen portal to access the government services with the following;
- Identification Verification
- Visit the website using your browser, then tap the “Create Account” button in the top right corner of the screen.
- Personal Details
- Enter your National Identity card number and first name exactly as they appear on the card by clicking on the Citizens account. Next, select Validate.
- You will be guided to the following action if your ID number and name are accurate. Your passport photo, full name, and ID number will be shown on the gateway.
- Email Verification
- After agreeing to the terms and conditions, you will be asked to enter your email address and create a password. Click the continue button to proceed.
- You will need to confirm your email address in order to move on to the following stage. Access your email account and click the verification link that eCitizen would have sent you through email.
- After a successful verification, select next.
- Mobile Number Verification
- The step that follows if for your mobile number verification.
- After entering it, a special verification code will be sent to that phone.
- Enter the code sent and select verify.
- Passport Photo Upload
- In order to complete the registration procedure, you must upload a recent passport-size photo with a maximum size of 500 pixels by 500 pixels at the final stage.
- Now that your registration has been completed successfully, you will be taken to your eCitizen dashboard where you can access a number of eCitizen services.
An invoice for the service delivered and the charge will be generated once you have selected the type of government service you require. Your options for payment will then include M-pesa, credit card, debit card, and prepaid cards. Lipa Na M-Pesa using the pay bill number 206206 is one of the most popular methods of payment for eCitizen. Should you select the M-Pesa option;
- Activate the M-Pesa app on your smartphone.
- Decide on Lipa na M-pesa.
- Choose Pay Bill from the menu,
- Then enter the eCitizen business number 206206.
- Depending on the service provided, an automated account number will be generated.
- Enter the invoice’s generated amount here.
- Send after entering your M-Pesa pin.
- Once Safaricom sends you a confirmation message, you’re done.

- Ministry of Lands
One can conduct a formal name search (Nairobi Blocks) at the ministry of lands if you intend to own land in Kenya. Soon, residents will also be able to obtain a land rent clearing certificate and request an official copy from the Ministry of Lands, according to the eCitizen website.
