NHIF imposes penalties for late payment or for those who fail to pay for a long period of time. Formal employees are penalized equal amount they are required to remit while those in informal employment/self-employed will pay 50% of the amount they are required to remit. For instance, if you work for a private sector and your monthly NHIF remittance is Ksh 1,000 and you fail to remit for 10 month, you will be required to pay a penalty of Ksh10,000 plus the amount of money you are required to remit that month. The total amount to remit is Ksh11, 000 in that case.
Self-employed individuals pay Ksh 500 monthly. If you fail to pay for two months, the next payment will be Ksh 500 for penalty plus Ksh500 for that month.
